Drug Addiction Treatment, Drug and Alcohol Rehabs Recovery and Abuse
Powder cocaine is available throughout the state. It is the drug most often associated with violent crimes in Colorado. Cocaine is generally sold in ounce and pound quantities. Crack cocaine is available only in large metropolitan areas of the state.
Mexican black tar heroin and brown powdered heroin are common in Colorado. New heroin users in Colorado are often young adults who smoke or snort the drug rather than inject it. This is due to a misconception that this practice is safer and less likely to lead to addiction.
Marijuana is readily available in large quantities throughout Colorado. A highly powerful form of marijuana, called "BC Bud," is also easily obtainable. The use and possession of small amounts of marijuana for sick and dying patients is allowed in the state. It provides protection against prosecution under state law.
Methamphetamine, a primary drug
threat to Colorado, is commonly abused in homes, public venues
such as nightclubs and raves, and other private locations. Crystal
methamphetamine is becoming increasingly available throughout
the State.
Club drugs are increasing in availability and use in Colorado. LSD in liquid form is readily available in the metropolitan areas. The diversion and abuse of OxyContin is a significant problem. Hydrocodone and Darvocet are the most commonly abused controlled substances.
According to the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (2001), 1.67% of Colorado citizens reported their past year dependence on illicit drugs. 34% of those surveyed in Colorado during 2001 reported lifetime usage of MDMA.
