Cocaine, particularly crack, is the principal drug threat to Georgia. Powder cocaine is often abused in Georgia raves, nightclubs, and bars. In some areas, crack users dissolve the drug and then inject it. These users are usually either current or former heroin abusers. Wholesale crack distributors sometimes sell "cookies," crack formed into patties. Georgia's heroin threat is typically limited to Atlanta and other large cities.

Marijuana is the most widely available illicit drug in Georgia. Most of the marijuana found in the state is produced in Mexico. Marijuana produced in Colombia, Jamaica, within the state, and from surrounding states is also available in Georgia. Methamphetamine poses an increasing threat to Georgia, especially in the northern and central areas. It has emerged as the primary drug threat in parts of northern Georgia. MDMA, LSD, ketamine, and GHB also pose increasing danger to Georgia. Middle class suburban teenagers and young adults typically abuse club drugs.

During 2002, OxyContin was the most frequently abused diverted pharmaceutical in Georgia. Hydrocodone, hydromorphone, and benzodiazepines are also diverted to a lesser extent. According to the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (2001), 1.17% of Georgia citizens reported past year dependence on illicit drugs.

Alcohol Abuse

According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2003), more than 46% of the Georgia population (aged 12 or older) reported past month use of alcohol. More than 15% of the people in the age group of 12-17 years and above 52% in the age group of 18-25 years reported using alcohol past month. Among the people of 26 years or older the rate is more than 49%.

In the survey, around 21% of the Georgia people showed binge alcohol use and more than 47% reported perceptions of great risk of having five or more drinks of an alcoholic beverage once or twice a week. In the age group of 12-17, past month binge alcohol use is more than 8%. In the state, 7.37% of the total population showed alcohol dependence or abuse in past year.
