Powder form of cocaine is readily available throughout Indiana, while crack cocaine is primarily available in the urban areas. Although heroin has not previously been a threat to Indiana, recent rates of use are on the rise. Purity levels for heroin are also increasing and have been as high as 80%. Increase in purity levels led to an increase in demand, which, in turn, led to an increase in the number of addicts.
The abuse of marijuana remains an important drug problem within the state. The influx of methamphetamine into Indiana has been increasing. Its abuse has spread from rural to more urban areas and has become a growing threat to Indiana. Health officials indicate that the drug is mostly used by middle class, blue-collar Caucasians, but is growing in popularity among youth.
The abuse of club drugs is not reported to be a major problem in Indiana. However, OxyContin continues to be a threat. Hydrocodone and benzodiazepines remain the primary pharmaceutical drugs of abuse throughout the state. In 2004, Indiana expanded their prescription monitoring program to include pharmaceutical controlled substances in Schedules II through V.
National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2002) indicate that 1.72% of Indiana citizens reported the past year, their dependence on illicit drugs. A survey of Indiana youth in 2004 revealed that 8.1% of 6th graders reported using inhalants at least once in their lives.
Alcohol Abuse
According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2003), around 47% of the Indiana population (aged 12 or older) reported the past month use of alcohol. More than 16% of the people in the age group of 12-17 years and around 62% in the age group of 18-25 years reported using alcohol past month. Among the people of 26 years or older the rate is more than 48%.
In the survey, more than 22% of the Indiana people showed binge alcohol use and around 43% reported perceptions of great risk of having five or more drinks of an alcoholic beverage once or twice a week. In the age group of 12-17, past month binge alcohol use is around 10%. In the state, 7.90% of the total population showed alcohol dependence or abuse in past year.
