Vicodin, Lortab, Ultram, diazepam, Hycodan, alprazolam, hydrocodone, Demerol, Dilaudid, Percodan and propoxyphene are the most popular pharmaceutical substances abused in eastern and central Iowa. These drugs are diverted through fraudulent prescriptions, doctor shopping, pharmacy break-ins, and hospital thefts. OxyContin is also noted to be a pharmaceutical drug of abuse in Iowa.
According to the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (2000-2001), 0.95% of Iowa citizens reported past year dependence on illicit drugs.
According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2003), more than 55% of the Iowa population (aged 12 or older) reported the use of alcohol in the past month. More than 20% of the people in the age group of 12-17 years and more than 67% in the age group of 18-25 years reported using alcohol past month. Among the people of 26 years or older the rate is around 58%.
In the survey, more than 26% of the of the Iowa people showed binge alcohol use and more than 34% reported perceptions of great risk of having five or more drinks of an alcoholic beverage once or twice a week. In the age group of 12-17, past month binge alcohol use is around 14%. In the state, 8.25% of the total population showed alcohol dependence or abuse in past year.
