Heroin poses a serious drug problem to Maryland. It is commonly abused all over the state, but is most problematic around Baltimore. Law enforcement authorities are particularly concerned with the availability of high purity heroin that can be snorted or smoked instead of injected. According to the Maryland State Police, heroin availability is spreading from cities to suburban areas of the state. South American heroin is the most commonly abused type in Maryland. Southeast and Southwest Asian varieties are also sporadically available.
Marijuana is the most readily available and commonly abused illicit drug in Maryland. Most of the marijuana available in the state originates in Mexico. The domestic marijuana cultivation typically takes place in western Maryland and along the Eastern Shore.
The demand for and the availability of methamphetamine are not high in Maryland. Users in western Maryland and young adults involved in the state's rave scenes are the main users of meth. The abuse of MDMA is increasing in the state and is spreading from the rave subculture to other social venues such as after school activities and parties. OxyContin has become the favorite among Maryland prescription drug abusers.
The National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2003) indicate that 2% of Maryland citizens reported past year dependence on illicit drugs. In a 2002 survey of public school students throughout Maryland, 11.7% of 8th graders reported using marijuana at least once in their lives.
Alcohol Abuse
According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2003), around 55% of the Maryland population (aged 12 or older) reported the past month use of alcohol. Over 17% of the people in the age group of 12-17 years and more than 64% in the age group of 18-25 years reported using alcohol past month. Among the people of 26 years or older the rate is around 58%.
In the survey, around 22% of the of the Maryland people showed binge alcohol use and around 42% reported perceptions of great risk of having five or more drinks of an alcoholic beverage once or twice a week. In the age group of 12-17, past month binge alcohol use is more than 9%. In the state, 7.55% of the total population showed alcohol dependence or abuse in past year.
