The use of powder and crack cocaine is considered to be a significant problem on Native American reservations in Montana. In a 2002 survey, an estimated 12% of the Montana adult population reported lifetime cocaine use. It is mainly available in the Billings and Great Falls areas of Montana.
As the availability of heroin is limited in the state, its abuse is not a major law enforcement problem. However, black tar heroin use appears to be increasing in western parts of Montana.

In a recent survey, 9% of the adult population reported a lifetime methamphetamine use.
The use of club drugs, mainly ecstasy, has shot up in Montana's larger communities. GHB and Ketamine have not become a serious concern to the state. LSD use and availability are limited to the college communities in Bozeman and Missoula. OxyContin is being illegally distributed in various areas in the state. Dilaudid and other opiate painkillers also have demand in illicit market.
The NSDUH (2003) indicate that 1.90% of Montana citizens reported in the past year, their dependence on illicit drugs. In a 2003 survey of Montana high school students, 44% have reported using marijuana at some point in their lives.
Alcohol Abuse
According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2003), more than 55% of the Montana population (aged 12 or older) reported the past month use of alcohol. Around 25% of the people in the age group of 12-17 years and over 69% in the age group of 18-25 years reported using alcohol past month. Among the people of 26 years or older the rate is more than 57%.
In the survey, more than 27% of the of the Montana people showed binge alcohol use and more than 36% reported perceptions of great risk of having five or more drinks of an alcoholic beverage once or twice a week. In the age group of 12-17, past month binge alcohol use is around 18%. In the state, 10.70% of the total population showed alcohol dependence or abuse in past year.
