Drug Abuse

Cocaine is the main drug threat to North Carolina. Cocaine HCl and crack cocaine are both easily available in the state. Heroin is most commonly available and abused in urban areas of the state, and is rarely obtainable in rural areas. Most heroin abusers in North Carolina are older, chronic abusers who inject the drug. Since the 1990's, due to the free availability of high purity South American heroin, a younger, middle-class population has begun to abuse the drug. Most of the heroin available in North Carolina is originated in South America. However, some heroin produced in Mexico is also available in the state.

Marijuana is the most easily available and extensively abused drug in North Carolina. Marijuana from Mexico as well as local sources continues to be widely obtainable in the state. Methamphetamine is a mounting threat to the state. As methamphetamine is increasingly available and abused and is less expensive, it has replaced crack cocaine in some counties as the main drug threat. The use and the popularity of methamphetamine are ever increasing in North Carolina.

MDMA, GHB, and LSD are the most popular club drugs in North Carolina. The diversion and abuse of pharmaceuticals, especially OxyContin, are growing problems in the state.

According to the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (2001), around 1.26% of North Carolina citizens reported in the past year, their dependence on illegal drugs.

Alcohol Abuse

According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2003), around 41% of the North Carolina population (aged 12 or older) reported the past month use of alcohol. More than 16% of the people in the age group of 12-17 years and more than 56% in the age group of 18-25 years reported using alcohol past month. Among the people of 26 years or older the rate is above 41%.

In the survey, more than 19% of the North Carolina people showed binge alcohol use and around 46% reported perceptions of great risk of having five or more drinks of an alcoholic beverage once or twice a week. In the age group of 12-17, the past month binge alcohol use is above 10%. In the state, 6.75% of the total population showed alcohol dependence or abuse in past year.
