Drug Addiction Treatment, Drug and Alcohol Rehabs Recovery and Abuse

Cocaine is a major drug threat to Virginia. It is available all over the state. Virginia is a main destination of heroin from many sources. While South American heroin remains the most prevalent type, Southwest Asian heroin is also available, but is less significant. Southeast Asian and Mexican heroin are sporadically available in the state. Young adults, who snort the drug rather than inject it, constitute a major part of heroin abusers in Virginia.

Marijuana is available anywhere in the state. Both commercial and high-grade forms are obtainable. Outdoor cultivation of cannabis by Caucasian criminal groups and local dealers is a significant problem. Mountainous areas of southwestern Virginia are notorious for this.

Methamphetamine is an increasing threat to Virginia. Retail prices of Methamphetamine remains steady for long in the state. MDMA can be considered the most easily obtainable and commonly abused club drug in Virginia. Availability of PCP is increasing at nightclubs and raves. Abuse of diverted Pharmaceuticals is a major drug threat to the state. The most commonly diverted and abused prescription drugs include Oxycodone and hydrocodone. However, abuse of these drugs has shown a decrease last year. Diversion and abuse of Xanax, Valium, and Ritalin are increasing in the state.

According to the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (2001), 1.04% of Virginia citizens reported their past year dependence on illicit drugs.

Alcohol Abuse

According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2003), More than 51% of the Virginia population (aged 12 or older) reported the past month use of alcohol. More than 18% of the people in the age group of 12-17 years and above 61% in the age group of 18-25 years reported using alcohol in the past month. Among the people of 26 years or older the rate is around 54%.

In the survey, around 21% of the Virginia people showed binge alcohol use and more than 42% reported perceptions of great risk of having five or more drinks of an alcoholic beverage once or twice a week. In the age group of 12-17, past month binge alcohol use is near to 11%. In the state, 7.33% of the total population showed alcohol dependence or abuse in past year.
