Marijuana is considered the most widely used illegal drug in Arizona. Along with the predominant Mexican type, locally-produced and Canada-produced marijuana are also available. The demand and availability of crystal methamphetamine, which has dominated street level sales throughout Arizona, have continued to increase.
Furthermore, the proliferation of clandestine laboratories and the increase of production of methamphetamine have become major problems in the state. MDMA, which poses a considerable drug threat to the state, is readily available and abused in Arizona. Many believe that MDMA is fast replacing cocaine among younger users.
The most commonly abused diverted pharmaceuticals include hydrocodone, benzodiazepine, oxycodone, diazepam, steroids, and codeine. Abuse of jimsonweed and LSD by teenagers continue to show an upward trend.
Alcohol Abuse
According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2003), more than 50% of the Arizona population (aged 12 or older) reported the past month use of alcohol. Around 19% of the people in the age group of 12-17 years and more than 58% in the age group of 18-25 years reported using alcohol past month. Among the people of 26 years or older the rate is above 53%.
In the survey, more than 24% of the Arizona people showed binge alcohol use and around 40% reported perceptions of great risk of having five or more drinks of an alcoholic beverage once or twice a week. In the age group of 12-17, past month binge alcohol use is around 12%. In the state, 9.29% of the total population showed alcohol dependence or abuse in past year.
