Drugs and Alcohol Addiction is a universal problem. There are several ways to overcome it.

While cocaine is the main drug threat in the state of Illinois, heroin also is a menace. The state has seen an increase in the number of young, white, suburban heroin users. This increase in abuse was the result of increased availability of lower cost, higher purity heroin. Heroin from all source areas is available in Illinois, although South American and Southeast Asian heroin are most prevalent.
Marijuana is the most readily available and most commonly abused drug in the state. Commercial grade marijuana produced in Mexico is the most widely available in type found in Illinois. Methamphetamine, which is cheaper and produces a longer euphoric effect than crack cocaine, is growing in popularity. Methamphetamine production is expanding in rural areas of Illinois, increasing the threat of the drug.
MDMA, Ketamine, and GHB use has increased, particularly among users living in urban areas and college towns. MDMA is readily available and is considered to be the most commonly abused club drug in the state. GHB and ketamine are sold in liquid and powder forms.
The diversion of legitimate pharmaceuticals is a major problem in Illinois. The most common diverted pharmaceutical drugs are hydrocodone, alprazolam, and phentermine. There has been a remarkable increase in the number of reported incidents of diverted pseudoephedrine.
According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2003), 1.89% of Illinois citizens reported in the past year their dependence on illicit drugs. During 2001, 36.9% of Illinois (excluding Chicago) high school students reported trying marijuana at least once in their lifetimes.
Alcohol Abuse
According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2003), around 52% of the Illinois population (aged 12 or older) reported the past month use of alcohol. Approximately 19% of the people in the age group of 12-17 years and more than 64% in the age group of 18-25 years reported using alcohol past month. Among the people of 26 years or older the rate is above 54%.
In the survey, more than 25% of the Illinois people showed binge alcohol use and around 41% reported perceptions of great risk of having five or more drinks of an alcoholic beverage once or twice a week. In the age group of 12-17, the past month binge alcohol use is around 12%. In the state, 8.74% of the total population showed alcohol dependence or abuse in past year.
