Drug Abuse
The primary drug threat to Michigan is cocaine. An emerging population of heavy crack users involves Native Americans living near casinos in northern Michigan.
South America (Colombia) remains the dominant source of the heroin found in Michigan. However, in the past few years, heroin originating in Southeast Asia and the Middle East has also been identified. Additionally, heroin originating in Mexico continues to be available in some parts of the state. Heroin is widely available in the densely populated areas of Michigan.
Michigan marijuana indicators remain stable but at high levels. Mexican marijuana continues to be the main form of the drug abused in the state. Increasing levels of methamphetamine abuse are obvious in Michigan, especially in the southwestern corner of Lower Michigan. The use of club drugs has steadily increased in the state, especially in urban areas of the state where the number of raves has also increased. A powder form of MDMA, which can be used intranasal, is now available in Michigan. There have been increased reports of ketamine use in Michigan and many veterinary clinics have experienced break-ins by offenders seeking the drug.
Drugs Law enforcement reports involving oxycodone have been rising in the west and north sections of Lower Michigan. OxyContin demand is increasing throughout the state. The Michigan Automated Prescription System (MAPS) program indicates that the state's OxyContin prescriptions have increased by 31%.
According to the NHSDA (2000-2001), around 1.26% of Michigan citizens reported in the past year, their dependence on illicit drugs. Results from a survey of Michigan high school students revealed that 55.4% of the 12th graders surveyed in 2003, used marijuana at least once in their lifetime.
Alcohol Abuse
According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2003), around 54% of the Michigan population (aged 12 or older) reported the past month use of alcohol. Over 19% of the people in the age group of 12-17 years and above 66% in the age group of 18-25 years reported using alcohol past month. Among the people of 26 years or older the rate is around 57%.
In the survey, more than 24% of the of the Michigan people showed binge alcohol use and around 40% reported perceptions of great risk of having five or more drinks of an alcoholic beverage once or twice a week. In the age group of 12-17, past month binge alcohol use is more than 12%. In the state, 8.46% of the total population showed alcohol dependence or abuse in past year.
