Drug Addiction Treatment, Drug and Alcohol Rehabs Recovery and Abuse
The most serious illicit drug threat to Minnesota is cocaine. Heroin distribution and use are not significant problems in the state. However, recent reports indicate that there has been an increase in heroin use, especially in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. Southeast Asian and Mexican brown powdered heroin are the most common types of heroin found in Minnesota.
Marijuana remains the most commonly abused and readily available drug in the state. Methamphetamine, as the second greatest drug threat in the state after cocaine, is increasingly available and its production is going up throughout Minnesota. The availability of higher purity crystal methamphetamine is increasing in the state.
Club drug use in Minnesota is very common among young people at raves and nightclubs in suburban areas. The availability and abuse of MDMA are increasing consistently. The abuse of diverted controlled substances continues to be a problem for the state. The substances most commonly diverted from the licit market are nubain, dilaudid, Ritalin, Vicodin, OxyContin, codeine products, benzodiazepines, and the anorectic drugs phentermine and phendimetrazie.
According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2003), 1.76% of Minnesota citizens reported in the past year their dependence on illicit drugs. 30 % of male 12th graders and 25% of female 12th graders surveyed during 2004, reported using marijuana in the past year.
Alcohol Abuse
According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2003), more than 58% of the Minnesota population (aged 12 or older) reported the past month use of alcohol. Around 20% of the people in the age group of 12-17 years and around 71% in the age group of 18-25 years reported using alcohol past month. Among the people of 26 years or older the rate is around 62%.
In the survey, more than 28% of the of the Minnesota people showed binge alcohol use and more than 36% reported perceptions of great risk of having five or more drinks of an alcoholic beverage once or twice a week. In the age group of 12-17, past month binge alcohol use is above 13%. In the state, 9.01% of the total population showed alcohol dependence or abuse in past year.
