Crack cocaine is a major drug problem in the metropolitan areas of Nevada. Cocaine HCL is moderately available in northern Nevada and readily available throughout the southern areas of the state.
Mexican black tar heroin remains the most common form of heroin available in Nevada. Domestically cultivated and Mexican grown marijuana are easily available in the state. In June 2001, Nevada Assembly Bill 453 was signed into law, allowing patients to use marijuana for medicinal purposes.
Methamphetamines, both imported and domestically produced, remain the principal drug of concern in Nevada. Club drugs are available sporadically in the northern urban areas of the state. However, in the southern cities, particularly Las Vegas, they are readily obtainable. Club drugs are typically abused in local nightclubs, adult entertainment clubs, and at raves. The pharmaceutical drugs of choice in Nevada include Lortab, Hydrocodone, Xanax, Codeine, Diazepam, and Oxycodone. Prescription forgery and doctor shopping are the primary methods to divert pharmaceutical drugs.
National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2003) indicate that 1.91% of Nevada citizens reported their past year dependence on illicit drugs. Approximately 46.6% of Nevada high school students surveyed in 2003 reported using marijuana during their lifetime and around 57.5% of the 12th graders reported using marijuana at least once during their lifetime.
Alcohol Abuse
According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2003), around 51% of the Nevada population (aged 12 or older) reported the past month use of alcohol. More than 18% of the people in the age group of 12-17 years and over 56% in the age group of 18-25 years reported using alcohol past month. Among the people of 26 years or older the rate is more than 54%.
In the survey, around 21% of the of the Nevada people showed binge alcohol use and around 42% reported perceptions of great risk of having five or more drinks of an alcoholic beverage once or twice a week. In the age group of 12-17, past month binge alcohol use is around 11%. In the state, 8.01% of the total population showed alcohol dependence or abuse in past year.
