Powder form of cocaine is easily obtainable all over New Hampshire. However, crack is primarily available in the urban areas such as Rochester, Manchester, and Portsmouth. There has been an increase in the availability of heroin along the coastline and in the southeast region of the state. Heroin has emerged as the most significant drug threat to New Hampshire. High purity, low cost heroin is attracting a new user population of young adults who snort or smoke the drug instead of injecting it.
Marijuana is the most readily available and widely abused illegal drug in New Hampshire. Most of the marijuana available in the state originates in Mexico. However, BC Bud from Canada and domestically produced marijuana are also available. THC content in excess of 22% has been commonly found in the area.
There has been a rise in the availability of methamphetamine in the state, particularly in and around the coastal area. There has also been a quick increase in the availability of MDMA in New Hampshire, especially among students and in connection with the raves. The diversion and abuse of pharmaceutical drugs, especially OxyContin and methylphenidate hydrochloride (Ritalin), pose significant and increasing threats to New Hampshire. Vicodin and Percocet are also diverted and abused in the state.
According to the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (2001), 1.44% of New Hampshire citizens reported in the past year, their dependence on illicit drugs.
Alcohol Abuse
According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2003), around 60% of the New Hampshire population (aged 12 or older) reported past month use of alcohol. More than 21% of the people in the age group of 12-17 years and around 72% in the age group of 18-25 years reported using alcohol past month. Among the people of 26 years or older the rate is over 63%.
In the survey, above 24% of the of the New Hampshire people showed binge alcohol use and above 33% reported perceptions of great risk of having five or more drinks of an alcoholic beverage once or twice a week. In the age group of 12-17, past month binge alcohol use is more than 13%. In the state, 9.09% of the total population showed alcohol dependence or abuse in past year.
