The most readily available drug in Oklahoma is Cocaine. According to a study by the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (ODMHSAS), in 1999, over 200,000 members (8.5%) of the adult population and over 15,000 members (9.4%) of the Native American population had used cocaine at least once in their lifetime. For the general population, the highest rate of cocaine use was found among person's aged 18 to 29. Among the Native Americans, the highest rate was found among person's aged 30 to 44.
Mexican black tar heroin is the most commonly available and abused type of heroin in Oklahoma. Mexican brown powdered heroin is also available to a lesser extent in the state. In 1999, over 30,000 (1.3%) Oklahoma residents and over 3,500 (2.1%) of the Native Americans in Oklahoma had used heroin at least once in their lifetime. Methamphetamine is considered the greatest drug threat to Oklahoma. It is available all over the state and the abuse of the drug is increasing steadily.
Marijuana, the main illicit drug of abuse in Oklahoma, is easily available throughout the state. Mexican "sinsemilla," which is normally found in pressed or brick form, is the most common type of marijuana available in Oklahoma. It has a strong presence in the urban areas. In 1999, 44% of the people aged 18 to 29, 53% of those aged 30-44, and 33% of those aged 45-54 reported using marijuana at least once in their lifetime. Among the Native Americans, 48% of the population aged 18-29, 60% of those aged 30-44, and 39% of those aged 45-54 reported using marijuana during their lifetime.
The abuse of club drugs has increased in the state of Oklahoma. MDMA is common at rave parties in eastern and central Oklahoma. Ultram, diazepam, Hycodan, Demerol, Vicodin, Lortab, propoxyphene, alprazolam, hydrocodone, Dilaudid, and Percodan are the most popular diverted pharmaceutical substances abused in the state. Fraudulent prescriptions, doctor shopping, pharmacy break-ins, and hospital thefts remain the main sources of these drugs. Use of OxyContin as a pharmaceutical drug of abuse is also increasing in the state.
National Survey on Drug Use and Health shows that 1.86% of Oklahoma citizens reported past year dependence on illicit drugs. A 2003 survey of Oklahoma high school students indicate that 42.5% reported trying marijuana at least once in their lifetime. Around 44% of Oklahoma 12th graders surveyed in 2003 reported using marijuana at least once during their lifetime.
Alcohol Abuse
According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2003), around 43% of the Oklahoma population (aged 12 or older) reported the past month use of alcohol. More than 16% of the people in the age group of 12-17 years and more than 58% in the age group of 18-25 years reported using alcohol in the past month. Among the people of 26 years or older the rate is around 44%.
In the survey, above 19% of the Oklahoma people showed binge alcohol use and around 44% reported perceptions of great risk of having five or more drinks of an alcoholic beverage once or twice a week. In the age group of 12-17, past month binge alcohol use is just around 11%. In the state, 6.92% of the total population showed alcohol dependence or abuse in past year.
