While the availability of crack cocaine is confined to metropolitan areas, powder form of cocaine is easily available all over Vermont. The principal drug threat to the state is heroin. Its availability is ever increasing and the level of abuse is very high in the state. The number of young heroin abusers in the state has increased dramatically.
The most easily available and frequently abused drug in Vermont is Marijuana. The majority of the marijuana available in the state is of Mexican origin. However, high quality Canadian BC Bud and domestically produced marijuana are also available in the state.
Methamphetamine is not being produced, distributed, or abused extensively in Vermont. MDMA also poses a low threat to the state. However, its presence is fast increasing. Diversion and abuse pharmaceuticals pose an increasing threat to Vermont. OxyContin is the most commonly diverted and abused prescription drug in the state. OxyContin diversion and abuse are such big threats to the state that the state welfare program stopped funding OxyContin prescriptions. Fentanyl, Hydrocodone, Ritalin, methadone, Vicodin, Xanax, and Diazepam are the commonly diverted and abused pharmaceuticals in Vermont.
According to the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (2001), 1.93% of Vermont citizens reported past year dependence on illicit drugs. 12% percent of Vermont 8th graders, 28% of 9th graders, 31% of 10th graders, 29% of 11th graders, and 29% of 12th graders surveyed in 2003, reported being offered, sold, or given an illegal drug on school property during the 12 months preceding the survey.
Alcohol Abuse
According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2003), more than 58% of the Vermont population (aged 12 or older) reported the past month use of alcohol. 22% of the people in the age group of 12-17 years and above 73% in the age group of 18-25 years reported using alcohol in the past month. Among the people of 26 years or older the rate is around 61%.
In the survey, around 26% of the Vermont people showed binge alcohol use and more than 37% reported perceptions of great risk of having five or more drinks of an alcoholic beverage once or twice a week. In the age group of 12-17, past month binge alcohol use is more than 14%. In the state, 7.77% of the total population showed alcohol dependence or abuse in past year.
